TV Installation

Clean walls, secure mounts, proper power.

The difference between a TV that looks built-in and one that looks stuck on the wall is what happens behind it. Running a power cord inside the wall is against code and a fire risk. The right way is a recessed power and cable kit, or a proper outlet installed behind the TV, with low-voltage cables routed separately.

As electricians, we handle that part properly, and we mount the TV into framing with a mount rated for its weight, at a height that works for the room. Over a fireplace, in a basement media room, on a brick wall, or on a swing arm in the kitchen: each one has its own approach.

We also wire media walls and home theaters: dedicated circuits for equipment, recessed lighting on dimmers, speaker wire runs and conduit so you can change cables later without opening the wall.

“Ryan Gath Electric helped us install a 220 line from our house to patio to hook up a pool heater. Ryan came to our house for a quote and was respectful of our needs. He genuinely cared about making sure we were getting the best value.”

Good to know

Good to know before mounting a TV.

Get the height right. For most living rooms, the center of the screen should be close to eye level when you’re seated. Mounting too high, a common problem over fireplaces, leads to neck strain. Tilting or full-motion mounts can help when a higher position is unavoidable.

Check what’s behind the wall. Studs, pipes, ductwork and existing wiring all affect where a TV and its power can go. We locate them before drilling, which avoids damage and lets us plan the cleanest route for power and cables.

Plan the equipment. Soundbars, streaming boxes, game consoles and cable boxes all need power and connections. Decide where they’ll live, on a shelf below, in a cabinet or mounted behind the TV, so we can place the recessed outlet and pass-throughs where they’re actually needed.

Think about glare. Windows opposite the screen and bright ceiling lights create reflections. Sometimes a slightly different wall or a dimmer on the room lights makes a bigger difference than a new TV.

Why it matters

It should look like it belongs there.

A well-mounted TV makes a room calmer: no cords, no stacked boxes, nothing that looks temporary. Doing the power correctly also means you aren’t hiding a hazard behind your nicest wall.

Planning conduit now means that when connection standards change, and they will, you can pull new cables without calling anyone to open the wall.

TV Installation FAQ

Questions we get about this work

Can you hide the power cord inside the wall?

Not the TV’s cord itself, since that isn’t allowed. We install a recessed outlet behind the TV or a code-listed power kit, which gives the same clean look safely.

Can you mount a TV over a fireplace?

Often, yes. We check the heat, the masonry and the viewing height, and recommend the right mount.

Do you supply the mount?

We can, or install one you’ve bought if it’s rated for your TV.

Can you mount on brick or stone?

Yes, with anchors and techniques suited to masonry.

Can you add an outlet for a soundbar or streaming device behind the TV?

Yes. We can install a recessed outlet or a code-listed power kit sized for the TV and accessories, with a separate pathway for HDMI and other low-voltage cables.
