Excavation & Trenching

The underground part of the job, done by the electricians.

A lot of electrical projects stop at the edge of the house because nobody wants to coordinate a separate excavation crew. We do the trenching ourselves, which means one company plans the route, digs the trench, lays the conduit and wire, gets the inspection and backfills, all on the same schedule.

Our trenching work covers the underground feeds residential properties need most: detached garages and workshops, pools and hot tubs, sheds and accessory dwelling units, detached EV charging stations, and standby generators with their wiring to the transfer switch. We plan the most efficient, least disruptive path across your yard and handle the permits.

While our core work is electrical, we also dig trenches for new on-property plumbing lines, such as water or drain lines to an addition or detached structure, and for subsurface drainage like French drains. Our excavation services are limited to on-property residential work. We don’t excavate for main utility lines coming in from the street.

“Ryan Gath Electric helped us install a 220 line from our house to patio to hook up a pool heater. Ryan came to our house for a quote and was respectful of our needs. He genuinely cared about making sure we were getting the best value.”

Signs to watch for

Projects that need a trench.

  • 01

    Detached garages and workshops

Permanent power for lights, tools and heat instead of a cord from the house.

  • 02

    Pools and hot tubs

Underground feeds for pumps, heaters and lighting.

  • 03

    Sheds and ADUs

Connecting outbuildings and accessory units to the home’s service.

  • 04

    Detached EV chargers

Power to a charger at the end of the driveway or in a detached garage.

  • 05

    Standby generators

Power and control wiring between the generator and the transfer switch.

  • 06

    Plumbing and drainage

On-property water and drain lines, plus French drains and subsurface drainage.

What the job involves

How a trenching job goes.

  1. 1

    Plan the path

We walk the property, check for existing underground utilities and plan the least disruptive route.

  2. 2

    Permits and utility marking

We handle electrical permits and arrange for existing utilities to be marked before we dig.

  3. 3

    Dig and lay conduit

The trench is dug to the required depth and conduit and wire are installed.

  4. 4

    Inspection

Underground work is inspected before it’s covered.

  5. 5

    Backfill and finish

We backfill and leave the path ready for loam and seed or your landscaper.

Why it matters

Safe, permanent and out of sight.

Buried conduit at the proper depth protects wiring from lawnmowers, shovels and frost, and it’s the only code-compliant way to permanently power a detached structure. It replaces the extension cords and overhead runs that tend to fail or get damaged.

Having the electrician do the digging keeps the project simpler: one schedule, one point of contact, and no finger-pointing between trades.

  • Conduit at proper depth
  • Permits & utility marking
  • One crew, one schedule
  • On-property residential only

Excavation & Trenching FAQ

Questions we get about this work

Do you dig for utility lines from the street?

No. Our excavation work is limited to on-property residential projects. Main utility services from the street are handled by the utility and their contractors.

How deep does electrical conduit need to be buried?

Burial depth depends on the wiring method and location. We install to the depth code requires for your specific run.

Will you damage my lawn?

Some disturbance is unavoidable, but we plan the shortest sensible route and backfill carefully so it recovers quickly.

Can you trench for plumbing too?

Yes, for on-property water and drain lines and subsurface drainage like French drains.
