Heating and cooling run on electricity too.

Every HVAC system has an electrical side: thermostats and low-voltage controls, blower and condenser motors, compressors with their start components, relays, contactors, control boards and the circuits that feed them. When any of those fail, the symptom looks like an HVAC problem even when the cause is electrical.

The bigger shift is the move to heat pumps. Across Massachusetts, a lot of homes are swapping oil and gas for air-source heat pumps and ductless mini-splits. They work well in our winters, but they’re significant electrical loads, and an older 100-amp service may not carry them alongside everything else in the house.

We work directly for homeowners and alongside HVAC contractors. We size and install dedicated circuits and disconnects, upgrade panels and services ahead of equipment installs, add surge protection for sensitive equipment, and troubleshoot the electrical faults that keep systems from running.

When your HVAC needs an electrician.

Not sure whether to call us or your HVAC company? Here’s where the line usually falls.

    Tripped breakers or blown fuses

    If the heat or AC keeps tripping its breaker, the problem may be in the circuit, the connections or the equipment. We sort out which.

Get the electrician and HVAC installer talking early. Equipment selection, the number of indoor heads and the outdoor unit location all affect circuit sizes and routes. When we’re involved at the design stage, installation day goes smoothly.

Winter performance depends on sizing, but it also depends on power being there when it’s needed. Dedicated circuits, proper disconnects and good connections keep equipment running through the coldest weeks.

Why it matters

Comfort depends on the wiring.

Heating and cooling equipment is expensive, and its warranty often assumes it was installed on correctly sized circuits with proper protection. Getting the electrical side right protects the equipment and the investment.

Planning the panel before a heat pump arrives also avoids the worst scenario: equipment on site, installer ready, and an electrical service that can’t support it.

Questions we get about this work

Do I need a licensed electrician to wire a heat pump or mini-split in Massachusetts?

The electrical supply to the equipment, meaning circuits, disconnects and panel work, should be done by a licensed electrician under a permit. HVAC contractors handle the refrigerant and equipment side.

Will a heat pump require a panel upgrade?

Sometimes. It depends on your service size and existing loads. A load calculation tells us whether you have room.

Do you work with HVAC contractors?

Yes, often. We handle the electrical side of installs and service calls so contractors’ crews can stay on the equipment.

Can you troubleshoot an AC that won’t start?

We can check power, disconnects, breakers and wiring. If the fault is inside the equipment, we’ll tell you and coordinate with your HVAC company.
