Working in Newton

Your local electricians for Newton.

Newton has been a key market for Ryan Gath Electric for years. We work in Newton Centre, West Newton, Newtonville, Auburndale, Waban, Chestnut Hill, the Highlands, Upper and Lower Falls, Oak Hill, Nonantum and Newton Corner, and each village has its own character and its own housing stock.

A lot of our Newton work is renovation. People buy a beautiful older home and want the kitchen, baths and lighting brought up to date without losing the woodwork and plaster that drew them there. Others are building new or taking a house down to the studs, and want the electrical planned properly from day one.

“I got an electric vehicle and needed to install a level 2 home charging station. Two professional guys showed up on time and the quality of the job was superb. I am happy to have found a local electrician who cares.”

Homes & buildings in Newton

Victorians, colonials and a lot of renovation.

Much of Newton’s housing dates from the late 1800s through the 1930s: Victorians, colonial revivals, Tudors and shingle-style homes. Houses of that age often still carry pieces of their original wiring, such as knob and tube in the attic or cloth-covered cable in the walls, alongside newer circuits added by several owners over the decades. Sorting out what’s live and what needs to go is a big part of what we do here.

Newton households have also been early adopters of heat pumps, induction cooking and EVs. Those upgrades put real demands on panels and services that were sized decades ago, so we spend a lot of time on load calculations and service upgrades before the new equipment arrives.

Before you start

Planning a project in Newton.

Newton renovations often run on tight schedules with several trades in the house at once. We coordinate with your contractor on rough-in and inspection dates so electrical doesn’t hold up plaster, cabinets or tile. For owners going all-electric, we recommend sorting out the panel and service first, then adding heat pumps, induction and EV charging on top of a system that’s ready for them.

Older Newton homes also reward careful planning around finishes. We’ll talk through which walls and ceilings can be opened, where attic and basement access make routing easy, and how to phase work so the rooms you live in stay usable.

Newton FAQ

Electrical questions from Newton

Can you rewire an older Newton home without destroying the plaster?

We plan routes through attics, basements, closets and baseboards to keep openings small and easy to patch. Some openings are unavoidable, but we work hard to minimize them.

Will a heat pump require a panel upgrade in my Newton house?

It depends on your existing service and loads. We run a load calculation to find out before your HVAC contractor installs anything.

Do you work with Newton builders and architects?

Yes. We coordinate with GCs, designers and other trades on renovations and new construction.

Can you work in a Newton home while we’re living there?

Yes. We phase work room by room, plan shut-offs around your schedule, and keep dust contained so the rest of the house stays livable.
