Commercial Smoke Detectors

Protect your people and your property.

In a commercial space or a rental building, smoke and carbon monoxide detection protects employees, customers and tenants who are relying on you to have it right. It’s also something fire departments and inspectors look at closely.

We install and replace hardwired smoke and CO detectors, extend coverage when spaces are reconfigured, and replace aging units before they reach end of life. For landlords and property managers, we work across units efficiently and schedule around tenants.

Larger buildings may have monitored fire alarm systems with their own requirements and specialized contractors. We handle detector and device work within our scope and coordinate with your fire alarm company when a system is involved.

“Great people to work with. Very knowledgeable of what they do. Always meet my expectations when the job is done. Thank you for your work ethic. Highly recommend!”

Signs to watch for

When detection needs attention.

  • 01

    Detectors past service life

Units around ten years old or older should be replaced.

  • 02

    Space reconfigured

New walls and rooms can leave areas without coverage.

  • 03

    New tenants or a sale

Changes in occupancy often come with inspections.

  • 04

    Nuisance alarms

Frequent false alarms can mean the wrong detector type or location.

  • 05

    Fuel-burning equipment

Boilers, water heaters and kitchens call for CO detection.

  • 06

    Chirping units

End-of-life or failing units need replacement, not just batteries.

Good to know

Good to know for owners and managers.

Know what kind of system you have. Many small commercial spaces and rental buildings use hardwired, interconnected detectors similar to residential ones. Larger buildings often have a monitored fire alarm system with a control panel, pull stations and a monitoring company. The two are maintained differently, and the fire department treats them differently at inspection.

Keep records. For rental properties and businesses, a simple log of when detectors were installed, tested and replaced makes inspections and tenant turnovers faster. We document the work we do so you have dates and locations on file.

Mind the environment. Kitchens, dusty workshops and areas near bathrooms can trigger nuisance alarms with the wrong detector type. Heat detectors or relocated smoke detectors can solve false alarms without compromising protection. We’ll recommend the right device for each location.

Plan for tenant access. In occupied units, we schedule with tenants in advance, work efficiently, and test every device before we leave so you’re not called back for a chirping alarm the next week.

If your building has a monitored system, we coordinate with your fire alarm company so our work and theirs line up and nothing is left untested.

Why it matters

Early warning saves lives.

Working, well-placed detectors give people the time they need to get out. In commercial and multi-unit buildings, where occupants may not know the building well, that early warning matters even more.

Keeping detection current also avoids delays at inspections, sales and tenant turnovers.

Commercial Smoke Detectors FAQ

Questions we get about this work

Do smoke detectors need a dedicated circuit?

Requirements vary by building type and system. Hardwired residential-style detectors are often on a lighting or dedicated circuit; monitored systems have their own power requirements. We follow what applies to your building.

Do you service monitored fire alarm systems?

We handle detector and device work within our scope and coordinate with your fire alarm company for monitored systems.

Can you replace detectors in occupied rental units?

Yes. We schedule with tenants and work efficiently unit by unit.

How often should commercial detectors be replaced?

Follow the manufacturer’s service life, typically around ten years for smoke detectors.

Can you help us get ready for a fire department inspection?

Yes. We can check detector age, placement and interconnection ahead of the inspection, replace what’s needed, and give you a record of the work for your files.
